Introduction

Katinka Hosszú grew up in Baja, this is where she fell in love with swimming. She won her first Hungarian title in 2003 on 400m medley in short course.

She won a gold medal in Lisbon at the first European Junior Swimming Championships in 2004 in 4x200m freestyle relay. At the age of 15 she took part in her first Olympic Games, in Athens where she finished as 31st in the 200m freestyle.

In 2005, during the European Junior Swimming Championships in Budapest she won three gold, two silver and a bronze medal for the Hungarian team.

In 2008 during the European Aquatics Championships in Eindhoven she acquired a silver medal in 400m medley.

During her second Olympic Games, in Beijing, she became 12th in 400m medley and 17th in 200m medley. She studied psychology at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles where she was awarded a sports scholarship.

At the 2009 World Aquatics Championships in Rome in 200m medley and 200m butterfly she won a bronze medal, and she became world champion in 400m medley. During the 2010 European Aquatics Championships organised in Budapest she won a gold both in 200m medley and butterfly, and as member of the 4x200m freestyle relay she won a gold, and in 400m medley a silver medal.

2011 proves to be the year of breakthrough in her university swimming career. In the NCAA Championships organised in March she earned 3 titles, which made her the most successful competitor of the NCAA Championships, and she was elected as the Collegiate Female Swimmer of the Year.

In the 2011 Shanghai World Championships she became 5th in 200m medley, and finished as 6th with the 4x200 freestyle relay.

In the 2012 Olympic Games in London she was 4th in 400 medley, 8th in 200m medley, and 9th in 200m butterfly.

Following the Olympic Games it is her husband, Shane Tusup, to manage her preparation and training in Budapest.

Upon Shane’s recommendation she starts competing at the eight-legged, short course swimming World Cup series. At the end of the series she finished as first among the women. At the 2012 European Short Course Swimming Championships in Chartres, organised at the end of year, she won both the 100m and 200m medley and the 200m butterfly.

In 2013 in Barcelona she became world champion again in 200m and 400 medley.

Following a successful world championship, she set out with Shane to compete at the 8-legged World Cup series where she breaks 4 world records. A few days later in Berlin she once again breaks her own world record on 100m medley, and sets a new record for 400m medley. Thus, Katinka Hosszú becomes the first swimmer to have set the world record in all three of the short course medley programmes.

In the summer of 2014, she won three new gold medals at the European Aquatics Championships in Berlin. Besides the 200m and 400m medley, she swims the best time in 100m backstroke, which is a new programme for her. Here Katinka Hosszú gets a silver medal in 200m butterfly, and a bronze in freestyle relay.

During the World Cup medley competition she once again prevails and at the end of the year she excels even at the short course World Championships. In Doha Katinka Hosszú won four gold medals – in 100m and 200m medley and even in backstroke. In 200m freestyle and butterfly, and 400m medley she won a gold medal, in 50m backstroke she acquired a bronze medal.

In 2015 she realises an old dream: she swims a world record during the long course World Championships in Kazan. In 200m medley she beat the 2009 record of Ariane Kukors that was considered to be unbeatable (2:06,12). She won the gold in 400m medley and earned a bronze in 200m backstroke. Once again she is elected to be the best female athlete by FINA and LEN. In December 2015 she won the short course European Aquatics Championships in 400m medley, setting a new world record.

In November 2015 she won the overall ranking of the World Cup series.
